The Crucible, the Red Scare and Other Witch Trials
1. What was Miller's point in writing The Crucible?
http://www.geocities.com/ResearchTriangle/Lab/4191/MILLER/millers.html
This site shows the relationship between The Crucible and McCarthyism. You can find the answer to this question in the Abstract and Introduction.
http://www.evangelica.de/The_Devil_and_Arthur_Miller.htm
Okay, I know this is a lengthy site, but it discusses a wide range of topics: the many different views and reasons Miller wrote The Crucible, The Crucible and the relation to the Salem Witch Trials, and McCarthy and theocracy. Jump around on this page and you'll be able to find some good info (most of the info on Miller is in the beginning).
http://www.honors.umd.edu/HONR269J/archive/MillerCrucible.html
Here, Miller says that he wrote The Crucible out of desperation (6th paragraph). He also discusses the points he thinks his readers get from reading this play. Miller tries to explain the public's view when the play first opened and how it related to the whole Communist issue that America was dealing with.
2. How are McCarthyism, the Red Scare, Arthur Miller and The Crucible interrelated?
http://81.255.61.186/us/crucible/Coralie%20and%20Alix/Mc%20Carthyism.html
This site talks about McCarthyism, the Red Scare, and The Crucible and their similarities. It also compares The Crucible's characters to the Red Scare. Finally, it shows the relationship between the other two events to The Crucible's plot and setting.
http://www.steppenwolf.org/backstage/article.aspx?id=164
Wow! This site discusses how McCarthy used fear during the times of the Red Scare on Americans. It also tells how McCarthy "pointed the finger" at Arthur Miller after The Crucible premiered. It also describes what happened to his name in society after he was blacklisted, much like the controversy with John Proctor about how your name is what defines you in public. This is one of my favorite sites on the subject because it's short, to the point, and helped me understand the situation better.
3. Document other times in American history when 'witch hunts' were conducted and discuss the outcomes of the Salem witch hunt and the other witch hunts you find. What do they all have in common?
The KKK
http://www.iupui.edu/~aao/kkk.html
Scroll down to the heading that reads 'Origins of the Ku Klux Klan', that is where it really talks about how the Klan started and how it unintentionally had a snowball effect--kind of like the mass hysteria in the Salem witch trials.
Religious Witch Hunt
http://victimsoflaw.net/Religious1.htm
The article that really caught my eye, titled Mom's religion dominates custody hearing, shows how a woman's religious views were used against her in the outcome of her trial concerning custody of her two children. Click on the article, and read more about it--it relates to how the courts in the Salem Witch Trials abused their power.

Lizzie..the geocities website you posted won't show up at school. But i did like your second site and how it talks about McCarthyism and the Red Scare. I also liked how it lists each character from the Crucible and gives a description about them in relations to the book.
GOOD JOB LIZZIE!! It is very organized and to the point. I wish I would have looked at yours before I did mine because I think it might have helped me understand things a lot more.
1. Your first site won't show up...but good summary, looks like a great site.
2. Great site! I love this link, it gives comparisons at the bottom. Great job!
3. The KKK idea is great, I never thought about it. I loved the link to the woman, it was great.
Great sites Lizzie- I think the KKK and religion are great witch hunt topics. Your source seem reliable and your summaries are informative. A good addition to this porject. Keep reading and posting.
Hey Lizzie, you did a great job on your blog. Maybe add a little more summary to your first site, but the other sites are summarized well.
Great site lizzy! The last site you posted was really interesting and a bit depressing. I can't believe how the courts can twist your words and beliefs around to make you look bad. Good job!
The KKK site was excellent. It was truly an example of a 'witch hunt'. I think it was and is unfair how the KKK treat people of a different religion or color. Great job!
1. The geocities site was unavalible. Otherwise I thought you site was extremely helpful. It directly said why Miller chose to write The Crucible.
2. Great sites! I have the same ones and found them to be extremely useful!
3. I never thought about the KKK when it came to American Witch Hunts, but its a really good example. They hunted down the blacks and I just recently heard that they were in Iowa "hunting down" Mexicans. Scary! Wow! Your second website on the third question was extremely interesting. The judges in that woman's case are just like the judges during the Salem Witch Trials!
Good job!
Ok. You ahve some good sites but...find a diff site to replace the geocities one. It says it's unavailiable. The other sites are informative.
1. I couldn't access your first site, but I appreciated that you told where to look for good info. The second one is the same as one of the sites I used.
2. I loved how this website compared the characters of the Crucible to specific individuals of the Red Scare. It provided a clear comparison and a lot of info. on the Red Scare.
3. I liked how you used the KKK for an example of a witch hunt. It shows how many situations qualify as witch hunts and makes the definition easier to understand. I also liked the site about religious persecution; it gave a lot of specific examples/stories.
Great Job!
Lizzie I couldn't get your first site to work so maybe check that out. Great description!
Lizzie I couldn't get your first site to work so maybe check that out. Great description!
You might want to one more site to question number two, Lizzie. It will help back up your other site. GOOD JOB!
Sorry the Geocities site isn't showing up, i'll try to find a new one!
Nice sites and summaries. Your blog very organized. I like your KKK comparison and that woman. I have not seen anyone use a site like your last one.
I couldn't get into the first site, but the other sites were really good. I thought the site about religion was the best because our country was based on religious freedom, and yet some people are being persecuted because of their beliefs. Also great job on your summaries, they really fit the sites.
i skimmed the KKK website and from what i read it was really good. Keep it up.
The first website on #2 was EXCELLENT. It was very clear cut and concise about it all and gave character description and comparisons to McCarthy.
You're website on religious persecution was very interesting. I found a lot of the examples helpful in understanding your point.
lizzie- the geocites website was great it was very long! but defintaly gave great information!
The secound websites were also very good, it weird to think judges could have that much power and twist people words around.
The KKK was a great example of another type of witch hunt in the world. Since we just learned about it in history i though i knew quite a bit but, this website gave so much more information i loved it!
Great job!
Good job on your descriptions that you have listed about each question. They are complete and do a good job in telling about each website
With the descriptions you posted and the websites it made it easier for me to understand The Red Scare and McCarthyism. Good Job Lizzie!
That dang geocities site, what's up with that? Haha. Nice job though. I like the site about McCarthyism it did a great job of describing it. Nice descriptions, keep up the good work.
wow...very impressive. i found the honors website to be most informative.
You have great sites except I couldn't get your first one to work. However, your other sites make up for it; they are informative, valuable, and helpful. Great job.
I like how your descriptions are short and to the point. It is very organized and helpful. Each of them gives insight to the sight and an accurate description...you weren't just rambling on. Good job.
Lizzie, you did an impressive job. All of your sites were valuable and informative, descriptions were to the point, and all of it was organized.
1) Great second site! Of course it would be coming from the author himself. :)
2) You would think these people would figure out that not everyone is guilty.
3) The KKK members are absolutely witch-hunters.
1)Well i couldnt seem to get the first site to work so you may want to check that out. Second site i have seen a few times now so i already know but it is informative.
2)I have this site to and i have seen it a few other times also...weird huh...anyway it is a good site since i have it.Good Job
3)I never thought of the KKK, that is a good idea for witch hunt...intersting too.
1. The second site is long, but very informative and cool since it was written by Miller himself.
2. This site is cool, since it has those sweet comparisons and I also have this site.
3. The second site about the woman in her court case is cool since it is more current and I never really thought about the KKK and their witch hunts.
Lizzie your first site doesnt show up, but the other one was good.
Hey the second site was a good. It answered the question realy well.
The third site i liked. The KKK was a great idea and the site was great.
Miller had so many points that he wanted to get across when he wrote The Crucible, but the one that sticks out to me the most is the one concerning the fact that he wanted to portray to the public about mass hysteria, and that we all have the capability to get caught up in the situation when everyone else seems to be doing that as well.
McCarthy was an evil man, and he used his political power and fear to affect the American population. He was angered when Miller released The Crucible, and got revenge when he blacklisted Miller.
I really have focused on the KKK as an important witch hunt in America because it is still around today, although more silently. They persecuted African-Americans on the fact that they believed in white supremacy. It really sucks that some people have the mindset that they have the choice to decide who deserves to live.
Other American witch hunts that have occured throughout our history include:
1.) African-Americans
2.) Indians
3.) Homosexuals
4.) witch hunts against race, religion, and so many more
